The Princeton Health Department is committed to maintaining the health safety of residents and visitors to Princeton. In order to promote Princeton's health and safety the Health Department conducts inspections of retail food establishments, public recreational swimming pools and spas, and youth camps located within Princeton.
Retail Food Establishment:
A Retail Food establishment (RFE) means an operation that stores, prepares, packages, serves, vends, or otherwise provides food for human consumption such as (but not limited to) restaurants, grocery stores, bakeries, bars & liquor stores, convenience stores, hospitals, nursing homes, day care facilities, pre-school programs, schools, mobile food units, and temporary food service events. All RFEs are subject to annual inspections or as often as the Princeton Health Department deems necessary or as an investigation into a complaint generated by the public. Inspections are performed to ensure compliance with Hamilton Township ordinances, regulations and N.J.A.C. 8:24, “Sanitation in Retail Food Establishments and Food and Beverage Vending Machines.” Retail Food Establishment inspections are rated as: 1. “SATISFACTORY”: The establishment is found to be operating in substantial compliance with N.J.A.C. 8:24 and food service personnel have demonstrated that they are aware of and are practicing sanitation and food safety principles as outlined in N.J.A.C. 8:24. 2. “CONDITIONALLY SATISFACTORY”: At the time of inspection the establishment was found not to be operating in substantial compliance with N.J.A.C. 8:24 and was in violation of one or more provisions of N.J.A.C. 8:24. Due to the nature of these violations, a re-inspection shall be scheduled. 3. “UNSATISFACTORY”: Whenever a retail food establishment is operating in violation of N.J.A.C. 8:24, with one or more violations that constitute gross insanitary or unsafe conditions, which pose an imminent health hazard, the health authority shall issue an unsatisfactory evaluation. The health authority shall immediately request the person in charge to voluntarily cease operation until it is shown on re-inspection that conditions which warrant an unsatisfactory evaluation no longer exists. NOTE: The results posted on-line only reflect the findings at the time of the inspection. An inspection conducted on any given day may not be representative of the overall, long-term cleanliness of an establishment. The results are not intended to provide a historical picture of the food establishment nor are they intended to predict future findings.
Public Recreational Pools and Spas:
Public Pools and spas are inspected twice a year for compliance under N.J.A.C. 8:26, “Public Recreational Bathing Code.”
The Princeton Health Department conducts annual pre-operational inspections of youth camps under N.J.A.C. 8:25, “New Jersey Youth Camp Standards.” All inspections of “single Sport Youth Camps” and all operational inspections of “Youth Camps” are conducted by the New Jersey Department of Health. Ratings of the inspections conducted by the Division of Health are now available for viewing on-line. Click on the Inspection ID to view a specific inspection rating.
