Unisex Single Stall Restroom Ordinance Goes into Effect January 6, 2020

The Princeton Council passed an ordinance requiring that all single stall restrooms in any publicly-accessible building (including restaurants, shops,offices, hotels, theaters, salons,etc.) be unisex or available to all individuals without regard to sex or gender identity. The ordinance went into effect on July 8, 2019.  All businesses must have appropriate signage as of January 6, 2020 (180 days from date of ordinance adoption).

AN ORDINANCE BY THE MUNICIPALITY OF PRINCETON ESTABLISHING STANDARDS FOR UNISEX SINGLE-OCCUPANCY RESTROOM FACILITIES, AND AMENDING CHAPTER 11 OF THE “CODE OF THE BOROUGH OF PRINCETON, NEW JERSEY, 1974”

This rule applies to single-occupant restrooms. These are restrooms designed for use by no more than one occupant at a time (or for a family or those needing assistance).
