Event Information

Princeton Mayor Liz Lempert and the Shade Tree Commission (STC) invite the public to join them on Arbor Day, Friday, April 27, as they plant a Princeton Elm in honor of former Princeton Township mayor and Princeton Council member Bernie Miller, who retired from Council at the end of last year.

The tree, which has carefully been prepared for planting by staff from the Public Works Department, will be placed in the ground near the Einstein statue on Monument Drive. It will be dedicated to Mr. Miller with a proclamation, read by Mayor Lempert, which commemorates his extensive and devoted service to the Princeton community. Throughout his long tenure in public service, Mr. Miller has functioned in a variety of capacities. In addition to serving as a Committeeman, Deputy Mayor, and Mayor of the former Princeton Township for ten years, Mr. Miller was elected to the consolidated Princeton Council, where he presided as Council president for three years.

Mr. Miller also served on the Affordable Housing Committee; was chair of the Cable TV Committee; and, for seven years, was the invaluable liaison from Council to both the Township and the consolidated Princeton Shade Tree Commissions.

Mr. Miller’s ardent support for and facilitation of the preservation of Princeton’s tree canopy epitomizes the goals and significance of Arbor Day, an annual holiday that is dedicated to the planting, care, and conservation of trees. In recognition of Arbor Day each year, the STC presents every third grader in Princeton with a seedling to take home and plant. This year, each student will be provided with a spruce seedling.

The dedication of the Princeton Elm to Mr. Miller will take place, rain or shine, at Monument Hall (corner of Stockton Street and Route 206 North) at 11 am. Everyone is encouraged to come and celebrate Arbor Day and Mr. Miller’s outstanding career in public service.
